501 darts — Rules and a free scorer

501 is the game you see on TV: both players count down from 501 and the first to finish exactly on zero with a double wins the leg. Here is how it works, and a scorer that does the maths for you.

501 in one minute

  • Both players start on 501.
  • Each visit is up to three darts; their total comes off what you have left. The most one visit can score is 180 — three treble 20s.
  • Finish on exactly zero, and the last dart must be a double (the bullseye counts as double 25).

Busts

A visit is a bust when it would take you below zero, leave you on 1 (you can’t finish 1 with a double), or reach zero without a double. A bust scores nothing: you go back to what you had at the start of the visit. On 32, for example, a single 20 leaves 12 — then a single 13 would go below zero, so the visit busts and you are back on 32.

Checkouts

A checkout is a finish. The highest is 170 — treble 20, treble 20, bullseye. Some totals under 170 have no three-dart finish at all: 169, 168, 166, 165, 163, 162 and 159. A classic two-dart finish is 100: treble 20, double 20. The checkout chart has a route for every finish.

On 141:

  1. Treble 20 — 81 left.
  2. Treble 19 — 24 left.
  3. Double 12 — zero on a double: game shot.

Questions

501 questions

Why do you have to finish on a double in 501?

It is the standard “double out” rule: the dart that takes you to exactly zero must land in a double, or the bullseye.

What is a bust in darts?

A visit that would take you below zero, leave 1, or reach zero without a double. It scores nothing and you go back to your score at the start of the visit.

What is the highest checkout in 501?

170: treble 20, treble 20 and the bullseye.

Can you score 179 with three darts?

No. Three darts can’t make 163, 166, 169, 172, 173, 175, 176, 178 or 179.

How many points is the bull in 501?

The outer bull is 25 and the bullseye 50. The bullseye counts as a double, so it can finish a leg.
